What are omega-3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential fatty acids. They are essential to human health but they cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason, omega-3 fatty acids must be obtained from food. Also known as polyunsaturated fatty acids, omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. Extensive research indicates that omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammation and help prevent risk factors associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

These essential fatty acids are highly concentrated in the brain and appear to be particularly important for cognitive (brain memory and performance) and behavioral function. In fact, infants who do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids from their mothers during pregnancy are at risk for developing vision and nerve problems. Symptoms of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency include extreme tiredness (fatigue), poor memory, dry skin, heart problems, mood swings or depression, and poor circulation.

Which is better, flax oil or fish oil?

This is a highly debated topic. Fish Oil contains EPA and DHA Omega-3; while Flax Oil contains ALA Omega-3. While the body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA Omega-3, the conversion amount varies from person to person. We prefer organic Flax oil for a number of reasons; it is a renewable plant source that is organically farmed, minimally processed, and easily replanted; while fish oils can be ecologically damaging, highly processed (to remove heavy metals and other possible contaminates) and fish levels are irreplaceably depleted.

Can I cook with your artisan cold-pressed oils?

Cooking with flax or hemp oil is not recommended and really defeats the purpose of Foods Alive taking such great care in pressing the oil at a low temperature. The Omega-3 and Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids are very delicate and high heat will destroy them. But you can use it after cooking on a number of dishes. Pour yourself a bowl of soup and add some of our gold flax oil to make it a creamy delight. This is great for any soups that call for milk. You can use our super dressings on salads, as a dipping sauce, on pasta or rice dishes, sandwiches, wraps and more. If you find a great way to enjoy our products, please share it with us!

Will I test positive for a drug screen if I eat your hemp foods?

To assure consumers that eating our hemp foods does not cause a confirmed positive drug test for marijuana, we have partnered with the TestPledge program. Foods Alive is committed to keeping THC levels in hemp nut and hemp oil below levels at which failing a workplace drug test is extremely unlikely, even when eating high amounts of these products on a daily basis.

Are the COA’s for your products available?

Foods Alive does not offer a certificate of analysis (COA) due to propriety information being attached to the document. While these internal documents include the heavy metal testing results for each product, rest assured that each product is fully compliant with food safety standards while consistently falling well under the guidelines of the FDA. If you are interested in bulk ingredients and require a batch COA for production purposes, please reach out via our contact form with a request: including your company name and intended use of the product.

What information does a COA contain?

Each product has a certificate of analysis (COA) that provides heavy metal testing results. Our heavy metal test results provide measurements for lead, cadmium, aluminum, and mercury. The results are reported as micrograms per gram. This number can be multiplied by the grams per serving to determine the total amount of naturally occurring metal in one serving. Rest assured, any batch that does not meet our quality and safety standards is rejected. At this time, COA’s are kept as internal documents due to the complex analysis and data that can be easily misconstrued. While we have chosen not to share our COA’s from individual batches, we can provide, upon request, our current testing averages for any of our superfoods. For more information about heavy metals please visit our page regarding Prop 65 here.

Shipping

When will my order ship?

Orders are generally shipped within 24-48 business hours of being placed. However, please note that we do not ship on weekends, holidays and Fridays. The reason we do not ship on Fridays is that we try to avoid our products sitting on a shipping truck over the weekend.

Will my order be irradiated during shipping?

No, we only ship UPS or USPS. UPS does not irradiate any packages and the USPS only irradiates packages going to the White House, Congressional offices and federal government offices in the 202-205 Zip Code exchanges.

Why are there not any international shipping options available at checkout?

At this time, we are not able to ship to international addresses. If you are outside of the United States, you can order Foods Alive products through www.iherb.com. They carry most of our items and offer the best international shipping options around.

Coupons/Promo Codes

Why won't my coupon/promo code work?

Most coupon/promo codes are only valid on Foods Alive products EXCLUDING multi-packs, bundles, samples, and bulk items because these items are already discounted. Coupon/promo codes are also one-time use only.

Ingredients & Allergens

Are Foods Alive products gluten-free?

For details on this topic, please visit our Allergen Declaration page.

Are Foods Alive product considered raw food?

This depends on your definition of Raw, but the short answer is yes. We also like to use the term Living Food since all of our flax crackers are soaked (which starts the seeds life process) and then dehydrated at a very low temperature to preserve the living enzymes in the flaxseed. You can take one of our crackers, break it up and put it in some dirt, water it, and watch it grow!

Wikipedia's definition: Raw describes a material that is in its natural unprocessed form. Since we soak our flaxseed in water, they technically are no longer Raw, but since we do not heat them enough to destroy the living enzymes, we (and most people) still consider them a Raw Food.

Packaging

Are the plastic bottles BPA-free and packaged without the use of hexane?

Yes, we use BPA-free bottles and we do not use hexane gas when bottling our oils and dressings.

What is your stand-up pouch packaging made of?

Our packaging is constructed of recyclable plastics and metal to create barrier layers, unfortunately, most recycling centers are not able to separate and recycle these materials. We would love to use biodegradable, plant-based materials and have made efforts to do so. However, the current options available on the market are not strong enough to protect our products from air and moisture or to withstand the shipping process. We continue to investigate alternative options that encourage sustainability, while offering our products the best protection available.
