How to Eat Healthy When on Vacation

Lets face it, it's hard to eat healthy on vacation. When you go on vacation somewhere, that's one of the top things you may be looking forward to: the unique, different food. 

Yes, it's fine to treat yourself every once in a while, but it's also important that you are being mindful of what you are letting enter into your body.

Here are 13 tips on how to stay healthy on vacay:

1. Start your day off right.

Starting off your day with a nutrient-rich breakfast will save you both money and calories. You may wonder, how calories?? It is shown that those who skip breakfast tend to binge later on, resulting in more calories to be consumed.

2. Plan ahead.

Decide before you leave for your vacation where you will eat at. By doing this, you can study the different menu's and decide which is the best option for you, along with any other modifications you may need to make.

3. Shop local.

When wanting to buy food/snacks to make, shop local. When shopping at the local market, you can find organic, healthy, whole fruits and veggies. When shopping at a store, you may be tempted to buy processed food items that can be harmful to the body.

4. Stick to your usual eating habits.

If you like to eat fruit and veggies at every meal, then continue doing so when on vacation. If you like to eat a handful of nuts in the afternoon, then again, continue to do so on vacation.

5. If you have a kitchen, USE IT.

It's proven that when cooking your own food, it's healthier than going out to eat and eating restaurant food. You'll have full control over the ingredients being used. And on top of this, you'll save money (yes, we know that vacay's can be pricey...).

6. Lighten up your beverages.

Beverages are known to have an extremely large amount of added sugar. When ordering a drink, ask for the 'skinny' version or the 'light' version to cut down a large amount of hidden calories.

7. Bring/make your own breakfast.

By doing this, you'll be able to ensure that your starting off the day on a healthy note. It will also save you money and hold you over until lunch time!

8. Daily activity is key.

Now I know, this doesn't technically have anything to do with food... but it sorta does. Daily activity gives you the freedom to enjoy a little dessert here and there :)

9. Keep in mind: Vacay's do not mean over-indulgence!

Just because you are on vacation, does not mean you should splurge. Enjoy your food without feeling the need to over-indulge. A little trick that will help you control yourself from doing this is to stay hydrated! By doing so, you'll feel more full - resulting in not wanting to eat more than you should.

10. Treat yourself.

The main reason why you're on vacation is to treat yourself, right? So plan what you want to treat yourself with everyday. This doesn't necessarily mean with 'junk food'... it could be with sushi, or fresh squeezed fruit juice, or whatever else you want! When you treat yourself everyday (not just on vacation), you are less likely to binge and eat a large amount of junk food in just one sitting.

11. Eat when you're hungry. Stop when you're comfortable.

I love this tip. When on vacation, we get carried away because our mindset is; "I'm on VACATION!" Yes, you're on vacation, but you still need to be mindful of what you're putting in your body as well as the amount. 

12. Make sleep a priority and manage stress

Yeah it's going to be hard to get your full 8 hours of sleep when on vacation  but it's important to get a healthy amount. Not sleeping results in overeating and stress. The more stress you have, the more you want to stress eat. You may be saying, "why would you be stressed on vacation?" but trust me, sometimes vacationing can be stressful for those who plan things out and who are 'perfectionists.'

13. Don't over-obsess

I feel like we can get so tied up into our weight. Just know that eating unhealthy for ONE week won't do much, if any, to your weight. You don't want to be obsessing over food the whole time when on vacation - that defeats the purpose of having a stress-free week. Don't be too hard on yourself.

As stated earlier, you're on vacation... don't over-stress about what you're eating. But make sure you are being mindful and kind to your body.

Get the exercise you need and fuel it with foods that you're body will thank you for in the long run.
